for your level of expertice
i.e. not done anything like this before as you say
i'd suggest you sand the areas down with sandpaper
made for metal. you can mask the areas off you need done
and just be careful not to sand the tape off.
the effect you get will be similar to
sandblasting, yet doesn't require the equipment or skill.
watch you strokes though. you'll probably
want an even look, so try circular motions when sanding.
