Sorry to have taken so long to respond--I've been busy. I'm a
beginning architecture student with a background in computer
networking.

In general terms: this sounds like an excellent idea and has been
practiced to considerable effect in the computer industry for ten
years that I know of.

Two basic approaches are possible: centralized aand decentralized.

In a centralized approach on sets up a server system which keeps the
documents. This must be done carefully and professionally--since that
server is going to become all-important it must be backed up
frequently and, for large projects, duplicate disks and servers would
probably be worth the considerable extra cost.

In a decentralized approach each group keeps its own server and
documents. This is generaly a more reliable way of working, however
it makes severe demands on the network and can run you into problems
when some critical server goes down on a weekend.

The biggest difference between the computer industry using the
internet to exchange documents and the building and construction
working in that way is that a lot of the documents will be drawings,
and big. At least some higher-than-voice-telephone bandwidth
connections will be needed.

You are probably also going to have to standardize formats for at
least some of your documents; ideally they should be accessible from
anywhere in the project and that means that everybody's software has
to be able to at least translate in and out of those formats.

So--my thoughts on the matter. I can get more specific if you write
back and tell me more about what you want. Are any of these helpful?
