Yes yes yes! I have often felt that the heart of art is the idea. That's
the core! There's the rub! The idea.

Isn't the idea what the symbolists were most interested in? Didn't Braque
and Picasso spend hours discussing their ideas with each other while
creating cubism? Wasn't Mondrian interested in the purity, the wholeness,
the sense of balance - all ideas - represented in the clearest way? Isn't
that the great discovery of modern art - that the idea, the thought is the
core of art? This is why an artist can claim to be an artist whether they
are Laurie Anderson or Jeff Koons or Ansel Adams or Kieffer or Anna
Mendieta or Ron Athey etc etc (hundreds of thousands of artists not
mentioned) - it is because they are interested in the idea - the upholder,
the banner of the art of the twentieth century.

Science discovered relativity, art discovered the idea. Isn't that the
natural conclusion of the renaissance? The renaissance didn't just come
because a bunch of italians rediscovered the Pantheon. The Pantheon had
been there all along! They discovered what was at the heart of the
pantheon, the math and engineering that made it possible to support such a
dome! It was the ideas, the formulae that helped Leonardo discover
mathematical perspective which led to the revolution in classical realism.
It was the idea!

my two cents.
