Architecture as Symbol producer (was: Duchamp on Haha)

Excellent algorithm -- symbols, buildings, humor.

Humor may be the only way to link the first two, greatly
underused, at least in public, but architecture makes no sense
at all without it. One of the longest running jokes is about
the difference between buildings and architecture.

If I'm not mistaken what you call humor David Reddy calls
techne. That's apt, and pretty funny when you think about it,
trying to turn theory into physical reality -- whether text or
pile -- or, even more hilarious, theorizing about the built
environment, after all, why bother.

Yet, there is nothing more glorious and liberating and comic --
doing what makes no sense and absolutely unnecessary.

If architecture was really needed, that would be very sad.
