I surprised at you Professor Kaplan. This sounds a bit like
California-style affirmative action bashing doesn't it? Reward merit, not
race, or in this case, gender?

Say what you will about Bernard Tschumi, by almost any standard his tenure
at Columbia has been marked by the most "outstanding leadership" in that
school's recent history. I would venture to say that the problem of
"un-outstanding leadership" may be endemic to the academy. Visionary
leadership and the comfortsof tenure make strange bedfellows. But the good
news is that many academies seem to be awakening to the problem of feeding
on themselves by promoting from within. Every day brings hopeful
announcements of surprising new appointees with promises (soto voce) for
broad institutional change. And, political correctness aside, jya is
right--many of them are "outstanding" women. IMHO.
