GRADUATE STUDENT CONFERENCE

REALestate
TRANSACTIONS IN CULTURE AND SPACE
March 21/22, 1998

Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia
sponsored by the Graduate Institute of the Liberal Arts

REALestate asks 'What are the costs of living when space becomes place?
How does the transition from space to place affect the intersections of
the personal, social and physical?' The conference find REALestate in
commodified locations, personal and communal properties, as well as sacred
domains. It will serve as a vehicle for examining spatial issues across a
range of environments and listings, including global and local, urban and
rural, constructed and organic, the fantastic and the imagined.

Paper topics can include, but are not limited to:

Urban studies, nationalism, displacement, utopias, communities, diasporas,
regionalism, architecture, travel and tourism, hyper/virtual/cyberspaces,
media and communication, cartography, colonialism and post-colonialism,
the environment...

We also encourage film, video, music and other forms of presentation.
(Please keep in mind, however, that all presentations will have a time
limit of 20 minutes.)
