R.R. BOWKER & OCLC ANNOUNCE PLANS
FOR NEW ELECTRONIC ORDERING/CATALOGING SERVICE

DUBLIN, Ohio, Oct. 22, 1993--R.R. Bowker, a Reed Reference
Publishing Company, and OCLC Online Computer Library Center, Inc.
(OCLC) have formed a strategic alliance to develop a book
ordering/cataloging service that will link Bowker's _Books in
Print_ and the OCLC Online Union Catalog and PRISM cataloging
system.
Libraries will be able to consult Bowker's_ Books in Print_
online via the OCLC system to locate and select materials,
transmit their orders to participating publishers or book
vendors, and at the same time, obtain bibliographic records from
and add holdings information to the OCLC Online Union Catalog.
The new ordering/cataloging system will enable orders to be
sent electronically to those publishers and book vendors who
elect to participate in the service.
Ira Siegel, President and Chief Executive Officer, Reed
Reference Publishing, stated, "For more than a century, R.R.
Bowker has continually endeavored to serve the changing needs of
libraries. This alliance with OCLC in many ways is the
culmination of this effort. Using the latest technology, it
links our combined database capabilities with the most advanced
centralized book ordering system for the benefit of all users."
Dr. K. Wayne Smith, President and Chief Executive Officer,
OCLC, stated, "This alliance will further access for libraries to
two important sources of bibliographic information--_Books in
Print_ and the Online Union Catalog and, hopefully, to other
sources in the future. Our planned ordering/cataloging system
will streamline a host of processes involved in the searching,
selection, ordering, delivery, cataloging, and processing of
library materials. It will help get materials into the hands of
library users quickly and economically. Both OCLC and Bowker are
strongly committed to making this new service widely available to
libraries, publishers, and book vendors."
R.R. Bowker has been providing bibliographic and reference
works to libraries and book sellers since 1872.
OCLC is a nonprofit computer library service and research
organization whose computer network and services link more than
17,000 libraries in 52 countries and territories. (PS)
