Restoration work at Nixamuuddin will revive the areas
lost glory

THE NIZAMUDDIN area, Humayun's tomb and its
surroundings may well become a major centre for
heritage tourism and recreation if the proposal of the
Aga Khan Trust for Culture to conserve the heritage
buildings in the area in an integrated manner gets the
final approval from the government. The Trust has also
proposed to carry out socio-economic development of
the communities living around the Nizamuddin 'dargah.'
If implemented, the project will be the first of it?s
kind in the country where heritage conservation
simultaneously improves the living conditions of
families living in the vicinity.
While culture ministry officials said the proposal is
under active consideration, Minister of State for
Urban Development and MP for the Nizamuddin area, Ajay
Maken, said his ministry has given in-principle
approval to the area development proposal. He said
that the trust had even offered to improve the living
condition of the Nizamuddin Basti by giving them
vocational training and shelter. The project can
commence as soon as a public-private partnership
agreement that clearly outlines the tasks to be
undertaken and post project maintenance is signed with
the several stakeholder agencies.
The Aga Khan Trust has already carried out restoration
of the Humayun's tomb gardens (one of the two world
heritage sites in the city) which has since the
restoration was completed in 2003 seen a 500% increase
in tourist numbers. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh
recently hosted a reception for Tony Blair and the
European Delegation here...
